Healing with Horses:
A Peer-Led Equine Wellness Group for Veterans & Trauma Survivors
Horses offer a powerful, intuitive mirror to human emotion and nervous system regulation. Combining peer support with equine presence offers a grounded, safe, and healing space rooted in connection.

To create a safe, non-clinical space for veterans and individuals in trauma recovery to experience the calming, grounding presence of horses, while engaging in mutual peer support.

Foster emotional grounding through mindful interaction with horses.
Build connection and trust through shared recovery experiences.
Offer a nature-based alternative to traditional group settings.

Duration: Weekly or bi-weekly sessions (60–90 minutes)
Setting: Outdoor equine facility or stable (partner site)
Group size: 4–6 participants per session
Activities include:
Grooming, groundwork, and horse observation
Guided peer discussion (non-clinical)
Mindfulness and somatic awareness with horses
Optional storytelling or journal reflection

No horse experience needed
Participants must sign a liability waiver
Not a substitute for therapy—peer support only
Cannot be severely ill.

Equine Recovery Coach with Lived Experience
Andrea, a fellow veteran, can help you work through the transition from military services to civilian life. Sharing how to get back into the everyday grind after military service and navigate applying for and using some of your earned benefits. Andrea can help you create wellness plans to live with purpose.

Health and Wellness Recovery Planning
Wellness Plan – A proactive plan for health and wellness to accomplish your recovery goals with mental health and/or addictions. Work with an Equine Recovery Coach to create a specific plan with SMART Goals.

Peer Equine Assistant
Available to assist a therapist with peer-led group facilitation. Able to assist introduction of peer equine mentoring to your practice.
